About Forest Stewardship Council

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a not-for-profit, Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that was started in the early 1990’s in response to global deforestation by a group of environmentalists, social activist and responsible industry leaders.

In a democratic, multi-stakeholder process FSC prescribes a set of principles and criteria, as well as national standards, for forest managers throughout the World to adhere to in order to achieve and maintain certification.

These principles include the recognition and respect of indigenous peoples’ rights, the protection of rare, threatened and endangered species and their habitats and the prohibited use of genetically modified organisms. The certification process also includes community consultations so to ensure long-term economic, social and environmental benefits from the forest.

Australian Recycled Timber is committed to our environment and procuring timbers from responsibly managed forests. We hold a FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certificate so to retain the paper trail from well managed forests to the end consumer. We believe FSC certification to be the strongest environmental accreditation in the world, as endorsed by NGOs such as Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund.
